My gaze fixed on the woods, glued to the last place I’d seen Daemon. Everything was silent and still, soundless in a totally creeptastic kind of way. There wasn’t even the low hum of insects. Not one sign of any woodland creatures scurrying anywhere. No birds were chirping or fluttering from leafy branch to branch. There was no flickering, brilliant white light shining through the trees. I peered out, beyond the porch and the cleared yard, into the thick woods surrounding the cabin Luc had stashed in the forests of Coeur d’Alene, a city in Idaho I couldn’t even begin to pronounce or spell. Opening my eyes, I inched aside the flimsy white curtain. It was happening-everything about the world as we knew it was ending, and it sure as hell did not feel fine. It involved climbing up on my roof and blasting R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” as loud as humanly possible, but real life rarely turns out that cool. Back in the day, I had this plan for the off chance that I was around for the whole end-of-the-world thing.

On that day, Louise Erdrich was at the end of a 6-city book tour, still flying in full planes. Tom spoke with the author on March 11 th, 2020, when public understanding of the severity of the coronavirus pandemic was in its nascent stage. Erdrich’s grandfather, Patrick Gourneau, who led the Turtle Mountain Band’s fight against what the government called “emancipation.”ĭescribing the book as "a masterpiece," Tom notes that like the many other Louise Erdrich novels he's had the pleasure of encountering, this one is "transcendent, enchanting, and revelatory." This is Erdrichs 6th standalone novel following Future Home of the Living God. It chronicles the efforts of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians to thwart the government’s attempt to terminate them, which is to say, end federal recognition of the tribe, and force them off their ancestral land. ZUCKED is McNamee’s intimate reckoning with the catastrophic failure of the head of one of the world’s most powerful companies to face up to the damage he is doing. He had mentored many tech leaders in his illustrious career as an investor, but few things had made him prouder, or been better for his fund’s bottom line, than his early service to Mark Zuckerberg. If you had told Roger McNamee even three years ago that he would soon be devoting himself to stopping Facebook from destroying our democracy, he would have howled with laughter. The New York Times bestseller about a noted tech venture capitalist, early mentor to Mark Zuckerberg, and Facebook investor, who wakes up to the serious damage Facebook is doing to our society – and sets out to try to stop it. Sarah McCoy is American literature and historical fiction author born in Fort Knox, Kentuck. She has a loving, but absent father leaving her with a mother that not only ignores her, but also emotionally abuses her. It’s not a recent ache, but one that began basically from birth. She is in pain and looking for a way to fill the void that lives within her chest. Not only does she have eating disorders, she suffers from mental ones as well, like depression and cutting to name a few. In Black Knight Kimberly deals with a lot of emotional issues, most of which she deals with alone with no one the wiser. I had no trouble jumping right into Black Knight as it can be read as a standalone, but catching up and reading more is something I’m definitely looking forward to. This was my first Rina Kent book, but I can say for a certainty that it will not be my last. Oh, it’s a gorgeous bumpy ride that touched me personally. Rina Kent wrote a beautifully twisted story with a broken anti-hero and a wrecked heroine. Black Knight is raw, powerful, and kept me riveted to every page late into the night. |
